Award-winning architecture at an international level

STUDIOMUC is the architectural answer to Munich's Olympic heritage. Thanks to its vibrancy and charisma this property offers the contrast which urban planners have been demanding to the generally bland urban residential architecture of our times. STUDIOMUC is the urban planning entry to the "Ackermannbogen" and crowns it with a flagship property of outstanding urban planning quality. With its two wings the main building on the south-west of the site contains 344 apartments of 22 to 49 m² in size and sets the tone for the three-section facility. The central gardens link the main block with two smaller blocks containing 33 larger apartments up to 138 m² in size. All three STUDIOMUC buildings harmonise with the scale of their surroundings: There are no outsize dimensions here. This is due to the construction criteria which were applied to the entire "Ackermannbogen" area in the 90s: at the time the space available for construction was limited and large green areas were integrated in the planning. Nowadays, however, because of the housing shortage the city planners would allow much higher residential density on such sites. As a result the residential facility "Am Ackermannbogen" is the kind of lucky opportunity for the future owners and residents of STUDIOMUC which Munich is unlikely to offer in the future. The architecture is the work of the internationally prestigious firm of Steidle in cooperation with town & country planner Jürgen Huber. Within the Munich urban landscape it makes a high profile mark. Thanks to its transparent glass shell, which reflects the surroundings and changes in the atmosphere of the light, STUDIOMUC at first sight looks like a work of art that seems to merge with the sky. Glass surrounds the entire south and west facades of the main building like a membrane. The coloured dividing walls of the balconies arranged behind the glass provide a restrained highlight. In modified form the colour design of the entire building ensemble was inspired by the Olympic colours of Otl Aicher. Here, too, they are symbolic of the gathering of people from all continents. STUDIOMUC provides a home for citizens of the world. The facades of the three buildings are just as diverse as their future residents. The interplay between the perspectives of the exterior creates dynamic tension between solid material and transparency, enclosure and open space, light and shade.

Enclosed security, energy and emotion – both internal and external. The values which are important to the property developers have been integrated into the architecture of STUDIOMUC. From the outside the front facade to the south west covering all five floors offers an uninterrupted view of the apartment world. Breaks in the building with glass frontage harmonising with the facade provide open green courtyards across the entire height of the building. In the interior of the building the translucence of the window modules provides the residents with an active backdrop. Within the interior both private and public areas are given vitality by the surroundings. The focal point of the STUDIOMUC design and at the same time the logistical centre is the entrance lounge of the main building. A further special feature: in each building the interior and exterior space is connected by room-high glazing. All apartments have either a glassed-in balcony or terrace or a loggia or balcony without glazing. This architectural concept is as impressive as it is surprising.

Ingenious facade technology:
to the south and west the glass facade of STUDIOMUC provides the building with a transparent external skin. Well thought-out technical services: In these areas additional concrete core cooling provides pleasant interior temperatures.

In order to complement the architectural design, which is reminiscent of dragonfly wings, in construction terms the architects from STEIDLE worked together with DS-PLAN, an engineering company specialising in facade technology, to develop a simple and safe specific solution:
the laminated glass elements in front of the balcony can be opened and closed at the push of a button. The doors, powered by electric motors, are highly wind resistant and can remain open even in high winds. This technically simple solution is as practical as it is convenient for daily use. Residents will come to appreciate the glassed-in balconies in a range of different ways.    

By the way:    
the "1 Bligh Street" high-rise office building in Sydney recently won the competition for the world's most innovative skyscraper. DS-Plan was responsible for designing the facade.

Extract from the verdict by the jury, explaining why STUDIOMUC was given first place in the contest to implement the MK1-3 development on the Ackermannbogen in Munich:
"The transition from private to communal is designed on the right scale. Overall the design offers a highly creative approach to the various urban planning, open-space and functional requirements, providing an impressive design and innovative highlight in particular on the corner of Schwere-Reiter Straße / Ackermannstraße which could enrich the architectural landscape of the city of Munich.
